Stamped Concrete in Hollywood, FL: Pros, Cons and Upkeep

New brushed concrete driveway with saw-cut control joints at a Florida home

Stamped concrete is regular concrete that is colored and pressed with textured mats while it is still wet, so it looks like stone, brick, slate or wood. In Hollywood it is a common choice for driveways, patios and pool surrounds when you want more character than a plain broom finish without the cost and upkeep of pavers. Here is what to know before you choose it.

How it is made

  1. Base and forms. Same as any slab: compacted base, reinforcement, forms and slope for drainage.
  2. Pour and color. Color is mixed into the concrete, broadcast on the surface as a color hardener, or both.
  3. Release and stamp. A release agent keeps the mats from sticking and adds a second, darker tone. The mats are pressed in while the concrete is still workable, so timing and crew size matter, especially on a hot day.
  4. Joints and seal. Control joints are cut to guide cracking, and the surface is sealed once it has cured.

How it handles South Florida

  • Sun and heat. UV fades sealers and some colors over time. Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot, which matters around a pool.
  • Rain. A sealed, stamped surface can be slippery when wet. For pool decks and sloped driveways, ask for a slip-resistant additive in the sealer or a texture with more grip.
  • Salt air. Near the beach and the Intracoastal, a good sealer re-applied on schedule protects the surface and the color.
  • Cracking. All concrete cracks. Well-placed control joints, often hidden in the pattern, keep cracks where you want them.

Upkeep

Plan to clean and re-seal every few years, depending on sun, traffic and the sealer used. Re-sealing also refreshes the color. Avoid de-greasers that can strip sealer, and rinse off pool chemicals and fertilizer.

Stamped concrete vs. other finishes

Finish Look Upkeep Notes
Broom finish Plain, textured Low Most affordable; best grip
Exposed aggregate Pebbled stone Low to medium Good grip; hides dirt
Stamped Stone, brick, slate Medium (re-seal) Most decorative; can be slick when wet unless treated
Pavers Individual units Medium (sand, weeds, settling) Repairs one unit at a time

Permits

A new or replaced driveway in Hollywood normally needs a city permit, and the apron in the swale often needs a separate right-of-way permit. HOAs may also limit colors and patterns. Our driveway page covers the permit process.

Is it right for you?

Stamped concrete is a good fit if you want a decorative surface on one continuous slab and are fine with re-sealing every few years. If grip and low upkeep matter most, a broom or exposed aggregate finish may suit you better. Tell us what you have in mind and we will go over the finish options for your project. Frequently asked questions

Is stamped concrete slippery around a pool?

A sealed stamped surface can be slick when wet. Ask for a slip-resistant additive in the sealer or a texture with more grip for pool decks.

How often does stamped concrete need sealing in Florida?

Every few years, depending on sun, traffic and the sealer. Re-sealing also brings back the color.

Stamped concrete or pavers?

Stamped concrete is one continuous slab that needs re-sealing; pavers are individual units that can settle and need sand and weed care, but can be repaired one at a time.
